Inspired by the rare synchronized emergence in 2024 of two cicada broods, a phenomenon that last occurred in 1803. These broods aged 17 and 13 years old made their debut screaming at the sun creating excitement within the entomology community and science world. While creating this illustration artist Hollow Amber began noticing a pattern of eyes organically appear while flowing with ink in hand. This began a moment of introspection and realization of a deeper meaning hidden within this piece.
Cicadas spend the majority of their lives burrowed underground, going decades without being seen. Upon their return above soil they make themselves heard by producing loud buzzing sounds from their tymbals. These tiny creatures can exceed the decibel of an ambulance. A lesson can be learned from these fascinating bugs. No matter how long you've been hidden, you deserve to emerge and be heard.
